Have you ever been transported back to your 10-year-old self when a familiar song comes on? Isn’t it interesting to be able to see your surroundings, the people, buildings, and some of the smallest details. These memories would have thought to be lost or forgotten years ago yet they come back as clear as ever.
Today, I was running on a treadmill in an Orange Theory class when a popular song from the late 70’s came on by The Cars band. Not only was I singing while I was jogging, it took me back to the 5th grade on the playground. My friends and I were listening to my cassette tape on my cool hand-held tape player I had gotten for Christmas. It was the rectangular kind where the tape is inserted on the top and the buttons are on the end with the handle. I could picture the large blonde wood chips under the twirling bars where we spent so much time spinning! From there I could see the four-square area with the door to the gym. As my mind began to work through my memories I could move down the walkway to where the ”portables” were, the music room and even where the busses lined up for us to go home. My mind began to “play” this movie of my elementary school memories. It was a little overwhelming to remember things in such detail!
I have had similar experiences I’m sure, also with certain scents but it is only recently that I learned association with music is one of the ways people learn. A lightbulb went off when I heard this, I remembered all the songs I used to sing with my girls… We had a whole CD of songs with Spanish words to help us learn the colors, days of the week and months of the year. Of course, once I was made aware of this association, it was easy to recognize it this morning.
Now I am using this phenomenon to help my subconscious work on my biggest goals and dreams! What kinds of learning have you or will you put to music to accelerate your learning?
thank you so much Ann. Our senses are awesome tools to bring us back as well as forward through feeling…thank you so much 🙂
Thank you Wanda, it is so fun to be able to apply the things we are learning!
Thanks for the recognition… I’m behind on my blogs and it is great to see my progress!
Awesome Ann, “I am using this phenomenon to help my subconscious work on my biggest goals and dreams!”
What a great blog, Ann, that plays into this week’s primary exercise. Thanks for being sixth to publish your Week #7! 🙂
